What is NFC (Near Field Connection)?
NFC stands for Near Field Communication which is a set of short-range wireless connection technology of about 4cm distance or less. With NFC, you can share small amount of data between an NFC tag and an Android-powered device, or between two Android-powered devices.
NFC provides a higher degree of security than Bluetooth and makes NFC suitable for crowded areas where correlating a signal with its transmitting physical device (and by extension, its user) might otherwise prove impossible. NFC can also work when one of the devices is not powered by a battery.
Android-powered devices with NFC can support three main modes of operation at the same time:
- Reader and writer mode
- Allowing the NFC device to exchange data with other NFC peers; this operation mode is used by Android Beam. And it is also called P2P mode.
- Card emulation mode which allows the NFC device itself to act as an NFC card. The emulated NFC card can then be accessed by an external NFC reader, such as an NFC point-of-sale terminal.
