Apple iPhone X Review

Introduction

The apple iPhone X is also known as iPhone 10. The “10” might have been replaced with the equivalence of 10 in roman numerals, and the equivalence is “X”.  And it has been 10 years since iPhone went into production of smartphones.

The iPhone X does not come with the regular LED-backlit IPS LCD display, instead it comes with a super AMOLED display. It didn’t also come with the aluminum frame like its former brands but it comes with a streel frame and a front and back glass as the other brands of iPhone before it.

The device is made with a new camera that has dual optical stabilization. It comes with the better chipset on the market. The front camera has a depth-detection. Its wireless charging is good.

With a Stainless steel frame edge, it has a reinforced glass at its front and its rear. The iPhone X is IP67 certified for water and dust resistance. It comes with a higher display of 5.8 inches Super AMOLED display of 1125 x 2436-pixel resolution. The RAM is 3GB with internal memory versions of 64 GB and 256GB of internal storage.

The Dual 12MP cameras on it comes with wide-angle aperture of F/1.8 and also with OIS and telephoto aperture of F/2.4 with OIS. The battery is good at 2,716mAh as it charges wirelessly and at a fast rate. It does not have a fingerprint sensor but a Face ID that works with a TrueDepth camera.

Sadly, there is not earphone jack but earpods are available. As usual, there is no provision for memory expansion using memory cards or SD cards.

Unboxing

If you unbox the device, make sure that the pack is freshly covered with a seal indicating that it has never been opened before you are about to open it. Just like apple has always been, you are not going to find any other newer thing in the pack if not a white three-pinned charger. You will also see a lightning cable that is also white.

You will definitely find a pair of earpods that are white. A provision for lack of an earphone jack was made and it is an analog jack adapter which you will plug to the charging port and plug the earphone into the other end of the chord that has an earphone jack. You will also find manual books and a sim card remover pin.

Design

The iPhone X has a physical dimension of 143.6 millimeters long, 70.9 millimeters wide and 7.7 millimeter thick. The iPhone X measures more than iPhone 8 in length and width. As it weighs 174 grams, it is a confirmed information that it is heavier than iPhone 8.

The device lacks an audio jack but a wireless paired earPods are made available for that inconvenience. The device is a waterproof for itself. And guessing rightly, the water immunity made apple not to include and earphone jack to the device. But before you charge your iPhone X or any other waterproof device, make sure it is very dry so as to avoid destruction of the phone by short-circuit.

With the earpiece at the top front-side of the phone, it’s screen seems to cover the entire front section of the phone but some space was left for the earpiece and front camera with its sensors. The front side also sees a 7 MP camera just like iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

The home key is no longer there because the entire front is almost covered with a bezel-less screen that is an AMOLED screen. And since there is no home key, there is no fingerprint sensor on the device, rather the security functions of the fingerprint sensor was replaced with a face ID.

The left side of the phone has the silencer key and two volume keys while the right side has the SIM slot for a Nano SIM and also a power/lock button. Apples iPhone X comes with Qi wireless charging technology.

At the bottom of the phone are paired eight rounded openings with a USB port of 2.0 placed in between them. These eight openings are microphone and speaker respectively. At the back you will see a 12-megapixel camera with a quad-LED dual tone flash beside it. This device has variant colors of Space Gray and Silver.

At the back, you will see dual camera of 12 megapixels vertically place at the left side of the rear part of the phone. The cameras have a Quad-LED dual-tone flash separating them. At the center of the rear part of the phone, you will see the apple logo magnificently place on the glass cover. At the center bottom of the rear side of the phone, you will see “iPhone” written there and ‘designed by apple’ written in tiny letters and fonts.

Display

The device has a 5.8 inches display. This 5.8 inches’ display is an AMOLED display. And iPhone X is the first iPhone to come with such display. This display has a resolution of 1125 x 2436 pixels making it to have 485ppi pixel density. The display ration is 19.5:9, while in percentage, 82.9%.

This AMOLED screen has HDR video support and True Tone adjustments. When these true tune adjustments are turned on, it will automatically correct white balance using the ambient light sensor.

The device has a brightness of 679 nits which comes with a wider color gamut. The brightness of the display is excellent with a contrast ratio of 1300:1. The color calibration is also awesome as it produces excellent colors that we see around the environment.

Some Apple devices do come with the Night Shift mode which sets the colors in those apple devices so that the eyes aren’t exposed to the bright blue light after sun’s light out.

Performance and Memory

The operating system that runs this device is iOS 11 latest version which is the iOS 11.1.1. The iPhone X is the first apple device to have that version iOS 11 operating system and it is upgradable to iOS 12.1.

The iPhone X is equipped with a new generation A11 Bionic chip making it the third iPhone to come with such chip. Apple iPhone X is also having a hexa-core CPU that runs at a speed of 2.39 GHz. These 2.39 GHz bionic A11 chips are more powerful than the 2.34 GHz chips in A10 fusion. The GPU is a three-core that is 30% more powerful when compared with GPU of A10 fusion.

The A11 Bionic comes a dual-core Neural Engine, which is a neural processor. The neural processor helps in hardware acceleration for AI machine learning. The AI Machine learning allows the system to improve functioning in complex tasks over time without specific additional programming.

This device comes with a 3 GB RAM like the iPhone 7 plus and iPhone 8 plus that comes with 3 GB RAM. The device has two versions of internal memory including 64 and 256 GB internal memory. As sad as it has always been, iPhone devices do not come with a slot for an SD card thereby making files and data to be stored on the phone memory.

Camera

The Apple iPhone X comes with dual rear cameras that are 12 megapixels. These cameras have wide telephoto technology just as iPhone 8 plus. The camera with the wider sensor comes with an aperture of f/1.8 at 28 millimeters. The camera with the telephoto sensor comes with an aperture of f/2.4 at 52 millimeters. The wider camera has 1.22 µm pixel size, while the telephoto camera has 1.0 µm pixel size.

The rear cameras have new image processor as Apple iPhone X is capable of shooting real time images. The camera comes with a new file format feature. All images taken with the iPhone X camera will be saved in the HEIF file format and videos in HEVC (H.265) video format. In case you don’t like the new format, you can choose your preferred format.

The selfie camera is 7MP camera in iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 plus. Apple iPhone X uses Retina flash depending on the color of the available light to provide more pleasing skin tones. The front camera has a face detection technology w. HDR makes images darker when turned on. The front camera can record selfie videos at 1080p resolution.

The device has panorama technology which helps the camera to take panoramic shots at 180 degrees. The selfie camera has a Face ID sensor that was used to replace the fingerprint sensor that would have been on the home screen.

The iPhone X records 4K videos at 60fps (HEVC) for 66MB in 10s, 4K videos at 60fps telephoto (HEVC) at 67MB at 10s, 4K videos at 30fps (HEVC) at 31MB for 10s, 1080p videos at 30fps (HEVC) at 11MB for 11s, and 1080p videos at 60fps (HEVC) at 15MB for 10s.

The device does not come with a fingerprint sensor and also it does not come with a home key. But a Face ID sensor was made in place of the fingerprint sensor. Apple iPhone X also has an accelerometer, a gyro, a proximity, a compass and a barometer.
